Netbooks Take

Market by Storm

Netbooks, which were originally developed as low cost

computers for students in developing nations, have seen

huge growth over the past year. According to Display-

Search, netbook sales for 2008 are expected to come

in around 14 million units, with Acer, ASUS, and MSI

accounting for about 75% of the total.

Consumers have latched on to the small form factor and

low price of these mini laptops, while reports of usage

vary from basic internet access to full-ﬂ edged comput-

ing. Top selling models are the Acer Aspire One, ASUS

EeePC, and the MSI Wind.

The strong growth is expected to continue, as Digitimes

reports expected 2009 sales of as much as 30 million

units, led by Acer with 12-13m and ASUS with roughly

7m units.

SED offers Acer and MSI netbooks throughout the U.S.

and Latin America, while ASUS netbooks are avail-

able exclusively to the company’s Rent-to-Own dealer

customers.

“The ultimate fate of the netbook isn’t clear, but it seems

increasingly likely that the new form factor is here to

stay,” said Jon Stokes of Ars Technica, a technology

research ﬁ rm. “As time goes on, we’ll ﬁ nd out the form

it’ll take, but Acer and ASUS are conﬁ dent of their star-

ring roles in the netbook’s ongoing history.”
